The first thing anyone told Nora Wilde about the Metro Desk was to stay away from it.
This happened on her first day at the Tribune. Editor-in-chief Harrington had made the assignment sound like a promotion - Metro Desk, sixth floor, section editor will brief you - and Nora had been nodding along thinking: all right, breaking news, police beats, nothing she hadn't handled before. She could do Metro. She'd done Metro at her previous paper. Metro was fine.
She had barely cleared Harrington's doorway before three women from the features section appeared. They had the coordinated urgency of people who had discussed this moment in advance.
"Metro Desk," said the one with the short dark hair and excellent earrings. Her name, Nora would learn, was Priya. "Which editor?"
"Cade Weston."
The three of them exchanged a look. In the look was an entire conversation.
"How attached are you," said Priya, carefully, "to your mental health?"
The woman in the middle - Dana Foley, though Nora didn't know that yet - said, with the kindness of a person who understood that bad news was still news: "Four assistants have left the Metro Desk this quarter alone."
"Four in one quarter?"
"One is in therapy. Not past tense - ongoing. Every Tuesday and Thursday." Priya held up a finger. "One stopped coming in. Left her houseplant on the desk." Another finger. "It is still there. It appears to be thriving on neglect, which is more than can be said for most of us."
"One," said the third woman, "got poached by the Post because she'd been at her desk so late they reached her at two in the morning. She was reachable at two in the morning."
Nora looked at them. "Is he good at the actual job?"
A pause.
"Yes," said Priya, in the tone of someone making a painful concession.
"The Metro Desk has broken four major investigative stories this year," Dana said. "He's exceptional at the work. He's-" She chose her words. "He doesn't explain himself. He doesn't make small talk. He doesn't appear to understand that other people have needs beyond the story - like lunch, or feedback, or simply knowing that their work is seen." She looked at Nora steadily. "He's not cruel. He's just completely, entirely, relentlessly focused on the work. For some people, that's manageable. For most people, that's-"
"A problem," said Priya.
Nora had thanked them and gone to the sixth floor, because she needed this job and because she had learned, over time, that secondhand warnings ran twenty percent less accurate than the people giving them believed. She would form her own assessment. She would be competent and professional and would not require hand-holding or acknowledgment, and she would be absolutely fine.
She stepped out of the elevator onto Metro Desk and stopped.
She had expected a newsroom. She got something that operated more like a field operation. The desk occupied the eastern half of the floor and it moved with a different quality than any other floor she'd been on that morning - fast, focused, deliberately organized. A police scanner murmured in the corner. Someone was on two phones simultaneously, writing while she talked. Three people around a monitor were arguing in the fast, low voice of people who knew the argument well and had a deadline for resolving it.
And in the center of it: a man.
He wasn't what she'd expected. She'd been prepared for someone who looked like authority - who wore his position like a sign. This man was in dark trousers and a plain slate-gray shirt with his sleeves pushed up to the elbows, and he was moving through the room with the ease of someone who had a precise mental model of every person and task in his sight line. He was directing - a word here, a gesture there, a look across the room that sent a reporter back to their desk at speed. He wasn't loud. He didn't need to be.
A deputy editor, she thought. Probably the deputy editor. Or a managing producer of some kind - clearly someone with the actual editor's ear and confidence.
She crossed to him because she needed to check in with someone and this person was plainly in charge of something. He was mid-sentence with a copy editor when she arrived, and he held up one finger without looking at her. He finished the instruction. He turned.
The face gave nothing away. Whatever he was thinking, it wasn't available to visitors.
"I'm Nora Wilde," she said. "I'm new today - editorial sent me up to check in with the Metro section editor-"
"I know who you are."
A small pause. "Then you have the advantage."
"I'm Cade Weston." Flat. No emphasis. "I run this desk."
The floor did something odd under her feet.
Oh.
Oh, that is-
She had spent three minutes in the elevator between the second and sixth floors telling this man that she didn't want to be assigned to Metro Desk. She had been specific. She had said she'd have preferred lifestyle, or entertainment, or really any section that didn't involve a police scanner and an editor who apparently drove assistants into bi-weekly therapy as a professional habit. She had said all of this with the confidence of someone who had not yet understood the person she was talking to.
He had listened. He had not introduced himself.
"I owe you an apology," she said.
"You owe me a story." He'd already turned back to his desk. He picked up a folder, held it out. "Bank robbery, Financial District. Suspects still inside." He reached for his jacket. "We're covering it."
She took the folder. "I literally just said-"
