What Annabel Ellsworth was thinking about, in the last ordinary moment of what had been a perfectly ordinary afternoon, was whether she had room in her suitcase for another pair of shoes.

She had already packed three pairs. Her brother Bennett had been informing her since breakfast that three was excessive for three years in London, that English women were sensible about footwear, that nobody studying at the Royal College of Music required cognac-colored ankle boots specifically. But the boots were absolutely perfect, and Annabel had grown up in a family where absolutely perfect was considered sufficient justification for most decisions.

She had them tucked under her left arm in a slim paper bag as she walked south on Fifth Avenue, already mentally rearranging the interior of her Hartmann suitcase. She could shift the extra blazer to her carry-on. She could leave behind one set of pajamas. She could-

"Girl."

The word came from her left, low and unhurried, and something in it made Annabel stop before she'd consciously decided to.

She turned.

The old woman was standing at the edge of the sidewalk as if she'd been there all along and the city had simply arranged itself around her. She was small, barely reaching Annabel's shoulder, with a face so deeply lined it was almost architectural - cheekbones and jaw sharp beneath skin that had lived in the sun for decades. Her hair was entirely white, pulled back in an arrangement that had clearly once been careful and had since decided otherwise. Around her neck, impossible to overlook against the dark fabric of her coat, was a scarf the color of fresh blood.

She was looking at Annabel with the calm, specific attention of someone who had already found what they were looking for.

Annabel felt her wariness come up immediately. She'd lived in Manhattan her whole life. She knew the rhythm of a street approach - the deliberate positioning, the unwavering eye contact, the opening word designed to snag you before you understood what was happening. Her friend Catherine had gotten caught last spring by a woman on West 72nd who'd spent forty-five minutes reading her fortune before Catherine had thought to check what it was costing her.

"I'm sorry," Annabel said, keeping her voice pleasant the way she'd been raised to do. "I'm a bit rushed."

"No, you're not." The old woman said it without argument, without any interest in debating the point - simply as a correction. "You're thinking about shoes."

Annabel went still.

Around her, Fifth Avenue moved at its usual oblivious pace. Heels on pavement. The rumble of a delivery truck idling on the cross street. Someone behind her speaking quickly into a payphone. Nobody slowed down. Nobody glanced over. Whatever was happening on this particular corner was happening only to her.

She looked at the old woman more carefully.

Her eyes were a pale, colorless gray, and they held Annabel's without blinking, without hurry. The attention in them was complete in a way that made Annabel feel pinned - not frightened, not exactly, just held in place by the sheer directness of being looked at so thoroughly.

"You're flying tomorrow," the old woman said. "To England."

The paper bag crinkled under Annabel's fingers where her grip had tightened.

She was wearing a wool coat, a silk blouse, good leather shoes. Nothing about her announced international travel. She'd told no one on this street her plans, and any number of young women in this city were going somewhere tomorrow. But the woman had said England. Not somewhere. Not abroad. England.

"How do you-"

"I can read what's coming for a person in their face." The old woman tilted her head. "It's not a skill anyone taught me. It's simply what I see." A pause. "Your face is unusual. I've been watching faces on this street for forty years, and yours worried me enough to stop you."

The word worried settled on Annabel differently than she expected. Not dramatic. Not performative. Just genuine - the tone of someone noting a symptom they'd seen before.

She should have kept walking. Her flight was tomorrow morning, she had dinner with her father at six, and she had always been the daughter who could tell the difference between evidence and wishful thinking. Her father had spent her childhood making sure of it.

She said: "What do you see?"

The old woman smiled. Not warmly, not unkindly - the smile of someone who had expected this answer and felt nothing particular about being right. She stepped back toward the low stone wall fronting the building behind them, out of the main flow of foot traffic, and settled herself on it as if she owned the whole block.

"Come," she said.

Annabel followed her. She didn't examine why.

"You grew up in a glass castle."

The old woman said it the way she said everything - unhurried, certain, as if she were reading from something only she could see.

Annabel opened her mouth and heard herself say: "I grew up on Seventy-Second Street."

"Yes." The old woman was entirely unmoved. "The address is different. The principle is the same."

She sat with her hands folded in her lap, rings on three fingers - old silver, worn smooth - and studied Annabel's face with the same steady attention she'd used since the beginning. Around them, the October wind moved through the street. People passed in both directions without glancing over. The city had its own indifferent momentum, and it was not interested in the two of them.
