The ballroom of the Grand Civic Convention Center in Chicago was filled with the kind of silence that only descended when something extraordinary was about to happen. Three thousand middle schoolers, their parents, and their coaches collectively held their breath as the host adjusted his microphone at the podium, a slow smile spreading across his face.

The silence shattered into a roar.

Among the winners that morning was a boy who had been expected to claim the top spot before the competition had even begun. He was the son of Maxwell Thornton IV, heir to Thornton Industries, one of the oldest and most powerful business dynasties on the East Coast. The boy was not merely brilliant - he was the kind of brilliant that made adults uneasy, the kind that radiated from his gray eyes like a challenge.

He stood on the stage now, broad-shouldered even at twelve, with the posture of someone who had been told his entire life that rooms were meant to accommodate him and not the other way around. A girl stood up from the third row.

The ballroom went very quiet in a different way than before.

Margot extended the trophy another inch toward Madison, who blinked and, in a fit of impulse, took it.

He leaned over the small gap between their chairs. "Why did you do that?"

She turned to look at him. Her eyes were very dark, very steady. "I didn't need it."

"That's not a reason."

She considered him the way she might consider a moderately interesting math problem. "It made her stop crying."

"She had no right to cry," he said, and he meant it with the precision of someone who believed strongly in the category of rights.

"Sure." She shrugged. "But she was still crying."

He had been prepared to argue further - he was always prepared to argue - but something about her expression stopped him. It wasn't indifference, exactly. It was something more radical than that. She genuinely did not care about the trophy. Not in the performative way of people who claimed not to care about things while caring desperately. She simply, actually, did not care.

This bothered him more than losing first place.

"If someone tried to take something you actually wanted," he said slowly, "would you let them?"

She looked at him again, and for the first time, he had the sense that he'd asked a question that interested her. She was quiet for a moment, thinking it through with what he would eventually learn was characteristic thoroughness.

"No," she said. "If I wanted something, you couldn't take it from me."

"Even if I tried?"

Her mouth curved - not quite a smile, or maybe more than a smile, something warmer and more complicated. "Especially then."

He should have been insulted. He was Sebastian Thornton. No one spoke to him this way. But instead of anger, he felt something else entirely - a flicker of something that felt, disturbingly, like excitement.

"I'm Sebastian Thornton," he said.

"I know." She said it with no particular reverence. "I'm Margot Caldwell."

"Did I?" She tilted her head. "I don't really track that."

"You don't remember beating me?"

"I remember the qualifier. I don't usually pay attention to who came in second." She said it matter-of-factly, without cruelty, which somehow made it worse.
