She'd gotten the number at nine that morning, delivered by a woman named Rosalind in NewYork-Presbyterian's financial services department - a composed woman in a gray blazer who read out figures with the practiced compassion of someone who had been delivering bad news long enough to have developed an entire system for it. Fifty thousand dollars. Cardiac bypass surgery for Margaret Webb, sixty-one years old, mitral valve functioning at thirty percent capacity. Dr. Fineman had already used the phrase "sooner rather than later" twice in the space of a five-minute conversation, which Claire had spent the subway ride home translating from medical-professional restraint into its actual meaning: soon, or possibly not at all.

Claire had nodded and thanked Rosalind and taken the itemized estimate and walked out through the sliding glass doors of the hospital into the heat of a July morning, and then she'd stood on the sidewalk for a full minute trying to decide whether to cry or to start making calls.

She made calls.

She'd been making calls, sending emails, and sitting across desks from people who smiled at her with something between sympathy and helplessness for the better part of three months. That had been three weeks ago.

The math was not difficult but she did it anyway, compulsively, the way you do things that will not yield different answers no matter how many times you run them. Twenty-four thousand, three hundred and twelve dollars: the sum total of what she'd managed to raise, borrow, and save. Fifty thousand required. The gap: twenty-five thousand, six hundred and eighty-eight dollars.

She'd tried everything she could think of.

By the time the sun had moved past its peak and was beginning its slow grind toward the Hudson, she'd been walking for four hours. Not toward anything - she'd run out of addresses with people behind them around three in the afternoon - just walking, because the movement was the only thing keeping her thoughts from collapsing into something she couldn't afford to deal with right now. She'd walked from Washington Heights to Midtown and then south and east and west again without much attention to where her feet were taking her, and somewhere below Canal Street she'd turned a corner and found herself in Tribeca.

She hadn't been there since a field trip in her junior year at Columbia - Dr. Okafor's architectural history class, counting the cast-iron building facades and the nineteenth-century cornices and also, privately, counting the distance between where she'd come from and where the people who lived here had always been. The neighborhood had an early-evening quiet that her neighborhood never got: no bodega light spilling warm onto the sidewalk, no bass from open windows, just cobblestones and brownstones and the particular weight of money that has been somewhere so long it's become invisible.

She felt the rain coming before it arrived. The heat had been building all day and the air had turned dense and copper-smelling the way it does when the pressure finally breaks, and when the first drops hit her shoulders she ducked reflexively toward the nearest shelter.

There were stone steps ahead of her - a narrow brownstone townhouse on Harrison Street, set back slightly from the pavement, with a carved lintel above the door and a brass carriage lamp throwing soft amber light down onto the entrance. The lintel made a small roof. She went up two steps and into its shelter and stood there, looking at the door.

The door was black, with a brass knocker in the shape of a sheaf of wheat. The lamp was old-fashioned and beautiful. Through the window to the right of the door she could see the warm glow of interior light, some dim amber source that cast the room beyond into something she could sense but not quite see. She had, for an obscure reason she couldn't have named, the feeling of standing outside something that was very far from her regular life.

She sat down on the bottom step to rest her feet. Just for a minute.

The rain was steady now, drumming on the lintel above her. She leaned her back against the iron railing and looked at the carriage lamp and thought about her mother, about the way Margaret Webb's face had looked in the hospital corridor that morning - composed, determined, already worrying about Claire more than about herself, which was so characteristic that it made Claire's chest ache. She thought about fifty thousand dollars and what stood between that number and her mother's heart.

She thought: I don't know what to do.

She didn't feel herself fall asleep. One moment she was looking at the lamp, and then she simply wasn't there.
