The first thing Bart Harrington was aware of, coming back to himself in the white room, was that breathing hurt.

Not the dull generalized ache of a bad night's sleep. Not the soreness of a hard workout or a long flight or any of the familiar inconveniences his body had accumulated over thirty-four years of being used without much gentleness. This was structural - a grinding, architectural wrongness in his chest that lit up every time his lungs expanded, a punishment for the simple involuntary act of staying alive. He lay still for a long moment and took the pain in, catalogued it the way he catalogued everything: calmly, without announcement, beginning at the edges and working inward.

Broken ribs. At least two, possibly three on the left side. The right arm was immobilized, wrapped from wrist to elbow, and when he tried to move it the shoulder seized in response - not just the shoulder, something deeper, a tightness that told him there was more going on than a fracture. The gunshot wound. He remembered that. He remembered the sound of it more than the impact itself: a compressed flat crack, like someone snapping a heavy board, and then the sidewalk rising toward him faster than it had any right to.

He opened his eyes.

The room was private - that registered immediately. No curtain partition, no second bed, no bleeping monitoring equipment for anyone else's body. A window showing a strip of grey New Jersey sky, late afternoon light going amber at the edges. The blinds were angled so that the view was mostly diffused grey with one bright horizontal bar of light across the middle. Standard issue hospital furniture, but only one of each: one chair, one rolling tray table, one small television mounted high on the wall with the volume off and the caption function running text across a financial news segment that Bart couldn't read from this angle. A vase of white flowers on the windowsill. Someone had put white flowers there, which meant someone had made a decision about his comfort, which meant-

A chair beside the bed, occupied.

Edward looked up from his phone.

"You're awake," Edward said, with the particular tone of a man who had expected this and was neither relieved nor surprised by its occurrence. The tone of someone who has been waiting for something with no particular emotional investment in the waiting itself, the way you wait for a kettle rather than a person.

Bart said nothing. His mouth was dry and he didn't particularly want the first thing he said in this room to be a request for water. He looked at the ceiling instead, and took stock.

He was alive. The room was private. Edward was here, which meant the situation had not yet collapsed into something uncontrollable. The door was closed. Through the narrow window in the door he could see - he turned his head carefully, ignoring the protest from his shoulder - a broad-shouldered shape in a dark jacket standing in the hallway. Matt. The shape of Matt's posture, even through safety glass and at thirty feet, communicated with perfect clarity that no one was getting past him without authorization. Matt had the particular stillness of a man who had trained for situations where stillness was not boredom but a kind of readiness, and who had been standing in doorways and hallways for Bart for six years without ever having been asked to, in the most concrete sense, actually do anything. It was possible he'd been hoping to get a chance. It was possible he'd already had one, in the last three days, that Bart didn't know about.

"How long," Bart said. His voice came out rougher than he intended.

"Three days." Edward set his phone face-down on his knee. "You were in and out for the first two. They had you under, partly - the shoulder required surgery, which you were not conscious for, which is for the best." He crossed his legs in the manner of someone settling in for a conversation of some length. "Coherent since yesterday afternoon, though you slept through most of it."

Bart processed this. Three days. He ran through the implications with the automatic efficiency of a man who ran an $84 million-revenue company and who had built his career on never allowing a gap between where he was and where he needed to be: three days of board meetings unmissed by him in person, covered by what story. Three days of press. Three days of market movement that he had not been monitoring, positions he hadn't been managing, a quarterly review that was in two weeks and a supplier negotiation that had been scheduled for last Thursday that had now, presumably, gone sideways. Three days of Joanie, who had been expecting him at the Hudson family gala on Thursday and had not received him, and who was not a woman who received inexplicable absences with equanimity.

Three days of himself, somewhere outside the operations of his own life, while his life ran without him and the world did not stop.

"Who knows I'm here," he said.

"Myself. Matt. Two doctors and one nurse who have signed NDAs with personal financial penalty clauses that I have no doubt you would enforce if given cause, and who understand this." Edward folded his hands on his knee. "No one else. Joanie does not know you're here. The board does not know you're here. No member of your senior staff knows you're here. No law enforcement has been involved beyond the first responders, whom Matt managed at the scene."

Bart took this in. "At the scene."

"The alley. In Hoboken." Edward's voice remained level. "A Tuesday evening. You were found by a couple walking their dog. They called 911. Matt arrived before the ambulance and was able to manage the situation before your identity was confirmed in any documented way. The official incident report describes an unidentified male victim, no cooperating witnesses."

"You erased me from a crime scene."

"I ensured that your hospitalization occurred in a way that doesn't connect Bart Harrington to an alley in Hoboken on a Tuesday night." Edward's voice carried the faintest note of something that was not quite reproof. "The distinction is meaningful."

"The press."

"Nothing. I released a statement Thursday morning saying you were managing a family health matter and would be unavailable through the end of the month. Deliberately vague. The financial press has been speculating about acquisitions." Edward paused. "The speculation is not harmful. The board is awaiting my briefing, which I will give them when you've told me what you'd like them to know."

Bart almost smiled. It hurt his ribs, so he stopped. "Joanie."

"I told her you were dealing with a family emergency and would be in touch when you were able." Edward paused, a half-beat. "She is not satisfied with this information."

"She wouldn't be." He breathed carefully, making the accommodation for what the breath cost him. "Charles."

Edward's expression did not change. This was one of the things Bart had come to value most about him, over sixteen years of professional relationship: Edward's face was a controlled instrument. It told you what Edward wanted it to tell you and nothing more, registered what Edward decided it was useful to register, and maintained in every other circumstance the smooth, considered neutrality of a man who had been in enough rooms where things were going wrong to understand that faces that showed too much were liabilities.

"That's what I need to discuss with you," he said. "Are you capable of that conversation now?"

"Yes."

Edward stood and went to the door, opened it, spoke briefly to Matt in a low voice too low for Bart to parse from the bed, and came back. He sat down and leaned forward, forearms on his knees, elbows pointing outward in the posture of a man reducing his footprint in a room before he said something that needed to be contained in it. He spoke at a volume calibrated for the room alone.
